Information note: HCSO uses a new data source for its statistics on accommodation establishments

According to the agreement signed between the Hungarian Tourism Agency (HTA) and the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) in June 2022, HCSO will publish its monthly accommodation statistics based on the data of the National Tourism Data Centre (NTDC) operated by HTA. As previously announced by the HCSO, the signing will be followed by a three-month test period, after which the agency will phase out the data collection it has been operating under the National Statistical Data Collection Programme and will publish the relevant data with an increasingly broader range of data. All domestic accommodation providers will transmit real-time turnover data to the NTDC, as required by the relevant government decree. The receipt of these data will reduce the reporting burden, as accommodation establishments and municipalities will no longer have to provide accommodation data directly to the HCSO.

In August 2022, data for commercial accommodation will be published from the reference period January 2022. Please note that for methodological reasons, these data are only comparable to a limited extent with the data on commercial accommodation previously published by the HCSO (see methodological notes).

In September 2022, detailed data on commercial accommodation for 2021 will be published in our summary tables (STADAT).

From October 2022, monthly data for private and other collective accommodation will be added to our releases. At that time, detailed data at regional level will be published in the Dissemination database.

Methodological notes

Accommodation establishments in operation: units with a guest flow during the survey period. Capacity data for the reference period refer in each case to accommodation establishments in operation during the month.

Revenues in accommodation establishments: the revenues that were realised during the period under review. Types: accommodation, catering and other revenues. Contrary to the data previously reported by the HCSO, these revenues do not include items extending over the reference period that were subsequently recorded.

Revenues from catering services: revenues that only include amounts linked to rooms payable for food and drink consumption in catering establishments. Unlike previously reported by the HCSO, they do not include items charged for consumption by external guests in hotels.
