The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) published the map and diagram visualisation of road traffic accidents (the map and data is only available in Hungarian) causing personal injury for the years 2019–2024. The interactive surface may be an excellent basis for professional and social discourse about road safety: provides an overview on the distribution of accidents by the days of the week, by the months and weeks of the year, on accident focal points and the most dangerous road sections. Available filters offer the possibility of data grouping by personal interest regarding the year of the accident, severity of injury (minor, severe or deadly) as well as the type of the accident causing vehicle (passenger car, motorcycle, etc.). Users may perform targeted researches, detailed analyses according to their sphere of interest, and may discover spatial and timely correlations between data. The interactive visualisation is more transparent and articulate than a traditional table format.
Vision zero is a long-term goal of the second EU White Paper, ratified in 2011, targeting close to zero number of road traffic casualties and severe injuries by 2050 in the EU. Both the EU and the Hungarian - the “Everyone is expected home” program - objectives highlight the significance of statistics analysing the issue.
The HCSO aims to publish data that are not only accurate and reliable, but easily accessible and understandable for the public, too. With the help of the Road traffic accidents causing personal injury visualisation road safety specialists, policy makers, journalists as well as the general public may easily orientate themselves regarding this topic.
