HCSO commemorated Elek Fényes, pioneer of Hungarian statistics, at his birthplace, 15/09/2025
The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) considers it a priority to preserve traditions, create value, and honour the memory of renowned predecessors who have made lasting contributions to the field of statistics. In this spirit, the office maintains close ties with the birthplace of Elek Fényes, the village of Csokaly in Partium. On September 7, 2025, representatives of the office attended a thanksgiving service held on the 300th anniversary of the construction of the local Reformed church.
Csokaly has special significance in the history of Hungarian statistical thinking: it was here that Elek Fényes (1807–1876) was born, a pioneer of domestic economic statistics and geography, and a prominent figure in the national history movement. In honour of his life's work, in 2024 the HCSO initiated the restoration of the former Fényes mansion in the village, which is planned to house a memorial exhibition and a youth centre.
At the invitation of the Csokalyi Reformed Church Parish, representatives of the HCSO also attended the thanksgiving service held on September 7, 2025, to mark the 300th anniversary of the construction of the local Reformed church. The sermon was delivered by Bishop János Bogdán Szabolcs, and Dean László Bara shared his thoughts on the occasion with those gathered. Dr. Katalin Szili, senior advisor to the Prime Minister, also spoke at the event, commemorating the outstanding work of Elek Fényes, with particular emphasis on his geographical and statistical surveys as a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which greatly contributed to the intellectual and social development of our country.
