The European Health Interview Survey begins, 15/09/2025

Every answer counts! Respondents will receive a shopping voucher.

In accordance with European Union legislation, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) will collect data on the health status of the population between 15 September and 15 December, 2025. This is the fourth time that the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) has been conducted in Hungary since 2009. The Office is waiting for the responses of more than 10 thousand randomly selected residents from nearly 540 settlements across the country. Participation is voluntary. All respondents will receive a shopping voucher.

The European Health Interview Survey, which starts on 15 September, 2025, covers the population aged 15 and over living in private households. The sample of more than ten thousand people from 538 settlements across the country was selected randomly, using a mathematical-statistical method. The people included in the sample will be asked by HCSO to respond by post, or by letter sent to Ügyfélkapu+ (Client Gate+) or DÁP (Digital Citizenship Program) digital platform, which can be done in several ways. The questionnaire can conveniently be completed on the internetduring the entire data collection period. Those who do not take advantage of the online option by 12 October will be contacted in person or by telephone by enumeratorsenumerators with a photo ID between 13 October and 15 December. Responding is voluntary. Respondents will receive a shopping voucher worth 5,000 forints if they complete the questionnaire online, or HUF 1,000 if they complete it with the assistance of an enumerator.

HCSO treats the data obtained from the survey as confidential and uses them exclusively for statistical purposes, in aggregate, excluding the possibility of individual identification. The first domestic publication of the survey results is expected in the spring of 2026, and the validated data of the member states will be available later on the website of Eurostat.

The conduction of the survey is required by European Union legislation (Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2529) for all EU member states. The uniform methodology and questionnaire used for data collection allow for international comparison of results, and due to the representativeness of the survey we can get a picture of the health status of the entire population.

The periodically repeated health survey reveals the relationships between health status and lifestyle factors that influence it, as well as changes in the health status of the population. On the other hand, the data obtained during the survey contribute to the elaboration of health policy measures of the member states, the improvement of the quality of healthcare systems, and are also key to research and programs related to health and health preservation.

In connection with the European Health Survey, the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK) is conducting a separate survey among EHIS respondents to learn about dietary habits that considerably influence health and to assess nutritional status. The National Nutrition and Nutritional Status Survey (OTÁP 2025) will be conducted in 219 settlements, visiting approximately six thousand people. The survey will be carried out by healthcare professionals. The information obtained during the survey will help develop programs that support the preservation of the population’s health. Participants in OTÁP 2025 will be rewarded with a smart bracelet and a shopping voucher worth 15,000 forints.

Further information about EHIS, is available on the HCSO website, and about NNGYK on the website of NNGYK.
