Numbers, creativity and vision: author’s competition for young people, 19/05/2026
What will Hungary be like in 100 years in your view? Let your imagination run wild, and write the future. And if you are instead a person of facts, show the present: what do our data say about today’s agriculture, the use of our time and the international situation of Hungary? Whether a short story seeing ahead or a data-based visual analysis, now you have the opportunity to draft your views creatively, from your own perspective. The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), the Csányi Foundation, the Hungarian Statistical Association and the Hungarian Local History Association jointly announce an author’s competition for primary and secondary school students as well as for students in tertiary education. One can apply for the competition – paying tribute to László Buday – by handing in a short story, a presentation or an infographic.
The aim of the competition, announced for the fourth time, is to bring the world of statistics closer to young people, showing them its creative and story-telling aspect.
Competition categories by age group
7th–13th-grade students (primary and secondary schools):
- Short story: „Hungary in 100 years” – presentation of a creative vision, which may also be built on statistical data of the present.
7th–13th-grade secondary school students:
- Presentation: a PPT file containing a short analysis, too. Themes that can be chosen: agriculture, international comparisons, or time use.
Tertiary students (up to the age of 25 years):
- Infographic: visual treatment of the above themes (agriculture, international data, or time use), based on statistical data.
Prizes:
The best ones in each category will receive money prizes of 30 thousand–150 thousand forints and valuable prizes in kind.
Important dates:
- Closing date: 25 September 2026
- Notification of prize-winners: 16 October 2026
- Prize award ceremony: 6 November 2026 (venue: HCSO headquarters)
