Doors Open Days at the Hungarian Central Statistical Office – 19–20 September 2015

On 19–20 September 20015, the ‘Palace of Statistics’ will open its doors again connected to the Cultural Heritage Days event series. The speciality of the building located at 5–7 Keleti Károly u. is that it is one of the few ones which is still used for the purpose which it was designed for. The eclectic headquarters was built based on the plans of Győző Czigler: the construction works began in 1896 and the inauguration took place in 1898. Thanks to the continuous conservation, the Palace of Statistics still awaits its visitors in its old splendour; during their visit in the building, they can learn many interesting facts on the history of the building as well. Among others, they can visit the president’s study and gain an insight into the everyday life in the pressroom, such as the publication of GDP data, which are strictly confidential until the last moment.

During the weekend, an exhibition of statistical curiosities, a game corner and a discount book fair will await our visitors. Furthermore, by trying out our visualization techniques, any of our visitors can become a statistician for a few minutes.

Together with the office, the HCSO Library with its more than 900 thousand publications will also open its doors wide, and visitors can become familiar with the reading rooms, the movable book shelves in the library’s compact storage area and the exquisite office of the director general; they can browse old maps and once classified documents; furthermore, join the library for a discounted charge. Younger children can spend their time with children’s books, colouring books and preparing do-it-yourself bookmarks.
