New President to lead the HCSO

After two successful terms as President of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), Dr. Gabriella Vukovich is stepping down at the end of her current term of office. The numerous achievements of her presidency include two censuses, two international peer reviews , several international conferences and numerous awards, the modernization of the Office's organisation, the exploration of new modes of data collection and their integration into statistical practice, as well as the integration of administrative data sources and continuous innovation. Dr. Áron Kincses, Deputy President of Statistics Directorate, will take over the presidency from 11 June 2023.

Dr. Gabriella Vukovich has been at the helm of the HCSO for 13 years, through two terms of office. As the 26th head of the historic Office and its third longest-serving President, she leaves a significant legacy, not only in the operation of the HCSO and the Hungarian statistical profession, but also on the global statistical stage through her extensive international activities.

Dr. Gabriella Vukovich has worked at the Office for some 50 years, since 1974, with some interruptions of varying degrees, typically due to prestigious assignments abroad. Among her many professional positions beyond the Presidency of the HCSO, she has been Chair of the United Nations Statistical Commission (2012-2013 and 2022-2023), Vice-President of the International Statistical Institute, membership in the Partnership Group of the European Statistical System (2016-2017 and 2020-2021), Member of the UN Secretary General's Independent Advisory Board on Data Revolution, co-Chair of the UN High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building (HLG-PCCB) for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In addition, Dr. Gabriella Vukovich has taught at several prestigious universities in Hungary: she is Honorary Professor at the National University of Public Service, at the University of Miskolc and at the University of Óbuda, and Honorary Doctor of the University of Miskolc.

The past 13 years have coincided with the "data revolution", the era of digitalization, which has presented the HCSO with new opportunities and challenges. Dr. Gabriella Vukovich has played an invaluable role in addressing these developments in an innovative way and in renewing the functioning of the Office. In addition, the President's extensive international activities have helped to establish the HCSO as a professionally independent and autonomous institution, recognized on the global stage. The outgoing President's last working day will be 9 June 2023.

Dr. Áron Kincses began his career at the HCSO in 2000. After holding various positions, he was appointed Deputy President of the Statistics Directorate in 2017 by the President of the HCSO. His scientific work is evtensive: he has published nearly 160 papers and has presented at numerous scientific conferences. He was awarded the title of Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 2023. His main research interests are related to international migration. He has represented the HCSO on the National Statistical Council during several terms and has also served on several international scientific committees. Between 2011 and 2015, he worked at the Department of Economics at the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church; since 2019 he is Head of the Department of Applied Statistics of the Budapest Business School, and since 2020 he is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Miskolc. In addition, since 2021 he is lecturer at the National University of Public Service, and has been honorary Professor at the University of Óbuda since 2021. During his academic career he has received numerous awards and scholarships.

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office gives thanks to Dr. Gabriella Vukovich, outgoing President, for her 13 years of fruitful work and dedication, and wishes Dr. Áron Kincses every success in the tasks ahead.
