Work-life balance in the HCSO

The office provides summer camp opportunities for employees’ children

It is of utmost importance for the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) that its staff can reconcile their professional duties and family responsibilities. This approach is reflected in the 15-year tradition of summer camps, which offer meaningful and safe activities for the children of staff during the holidays. In recognition of these family-oriented efforts, the Office has been awarded the Family-friendly Workplace title on several occasions. One of the memorable moments of this year’s camping season was when the children were able to go to the place where the most important decisions in statistics are made: the President of the Office welcomed them in person in his office.

The recognition of Family-friendly Workplace is not just about formal measures. Every year, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office provides free summer day camps for staff members’ children, which offer a reliable and meaningful activity during the school holidays, making it easier for colleagues with children to organise their school holidays. The playroom, which is open from the end of June to mid-August in the Office’s buildings in Budapest and in the countryside, offers more than 100 children who register there not only supervision but also fun: week after week, they take part in thematic activities led by qualified teachers, including dance, language games, sports and instrumental music. The playroom sessions run from 8 am to 5 pm, according to parents’ schedules.

This year, the children had a special experience when the President of the HCSO, Dr. Áron Kincses, hosted them in his office. The personal meeting was not only a chance to have a snack, but also to get a first-hand insight into the workings of official statistics at the highest level, and even to take the President’s chair for a few minutes.

The positive feedback from the camps confirms the success of the programme, which will be organised by the HCSO in the coming years. In addition to summer childcare, the Office also supports employees with children by organising an annual Santa Claus celebration, a family day (Grafikon Day) and childcare and school start-up support. It also provides health care services available to all colleagues: subsidies for screening tests and free dental care are part of the employee benefit scheme. HCSO is committed to creating a modern working environment where attention is paid not only to professional performance but also to the human factor – family, health and everyday well-being.
