Artificial intelligence in statistics production

Cooperation agreement between HCSO and the Artificial Intelligence National Laboratory

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) and the Artificial Intelligence National Laboratory (MILAB) have signed a cooperation agreement. The aim of the research and innovation cooperation is to intensively integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into statistics production in order to accelerate processes and increase efficiency by effectively exploiting synergies. Through knowledge sharing, HCSO and MILAB will jointly seek solutions to emerging professional challenges by applying their sectoral expertise. The parties signed the agreement at a public press event on 14 May 2025 in the Palace of Statistics.

The Hungarian Central Statistical Office is committed to continuous innovation and to exploiting the opportunities offered by advanced technologies to simplify and automate its processes. To this end, on 14 May 2025 it signed a cooperation agreement with the Artificial Intelligence National Laboratory. The contracting parties aim to improve the processing of available data and the efficient collection of data using artificial intelligence. The HCSO and MILAB will continue to cooperate in information and knowledge sharing, conducting joint research projects with MILAB's consortium leader institute - HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control, as well as in expert partnership and mutual professional support.

A key element of HCSO's strategy is a commitment to innovation, with solutions that enable rapid adaptation to changing environments and trends, early identification of emerging data needs and forward-looking action, while meeting the usual quality criteria.

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasing role in data collection and processing, data analysis and other statistical tasks. The HCSO is currently making use of the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence. In the framework of the agreement now concluded, the Office intends to identify additional AI-based methodological and professional statistical solutions that it can use in the performance of its professional tasks. Examples of such applications include machine word processing, structuring of different data sets or economic and socio-structural modelling.

Dr. László Monostori, Director of the HUN-REN Institute for Computer Science and Control (HUN-REN SZTAKI), which coordinates MILAB, said that since its foundation, HUN-REN SZTAKI has attached great importance to industry relations and strives to make use of scientific results, thus achieving positive economic and social impacts.

Dr András Benczúr, MILAB's Technical Manager, added that artificial intelligence is a research field that is full of practical application possibilities even in its early stages. The HCSO deals with data analysis from the outset, and by complementing this with AI tools, practical applications can be achieved that could even have an impact on the national economy.
