Stat Wars Uni - Announcement of results
Record number of participants – exceptionally exciting finals
A record number of participants joined this year the Stat Wars Uni contest for university students, organised jointly by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), the National Bank of Hungary (MNB) and the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority (HEA). Out of the over 140 enrolled teams, following three online rounds, six-six made it to the finals organized on 15 December 2025 in the Palace of Statistics.
More young statisticians than ever before tested their knowledge during the Stat Wars Uni contest. A total of 145 enrolments have been received for the contest announced in early September by the HCSO, MNB and HEA. A maximum of 3 student-teams could enrol in two categories: BA/BSc and MA/MSc. Participants had to prove themselves in analysing, processing and visualising economic, social, regional statistic data series.
Following the three online rounds the Palace of Statistics hosted the finals with the participation of the six most successful teams. Finalists had only one hour to elaborate the assignment, then present their analyses to the jury of experts from the HCSO, MNB and HEA as well as renowned university professors. After the presentations the jury evaluated the accomplishments of the teams and decided the ranking.
Final results of the BA/BSc category:
- 1st place: ANOVándorok – Corvinus University of Budapest
- 2nd place: (halál)Csillagok – Corvinus University of Budapest
- 3rd place: Bayes Brigád – Corvinus University of Budapest
Final results of the MA/MSc category:
- 1st place: Lukini Blemco – Corvinus University of Budapest
- 2nd place: Sithnifikancia – Corvinus University of Budapest
- 3rd place: 3 szigma – Corvinus University of Budapest
The best teams in both categories have been granted significant monetary rewards. The team in the 1st place has been rewarded with 1 050 000 HUF, the second place with 750 000 HUF, the third with 600 000 HUF.
The organisers wish to congratulate every finalist and those awarded, who demonstrated once again through their work that data-based thinking is strongly present among Hungarian students.
Besides Stat Wars Uni, the statistics competition organised for secondary school students entitled Stat Wars, is the largest annual contest of its kind. The objective of both competitions is promoting the science of statistics and emphasizing the importance of statistical literacy among students, as well as recognizing professional excellence and talent.
It is a significant achievement that starting from the 2026 admission period the John von Neumann University will award institutional admission points to members of teams achieving placements in the Stat Wars competition: members of teams ranked 1st to 10th will be granted the maximum possible 100 points, while members of teams ranked 11th to 20th will be awarded 50 points. (Information regarding additional admission points is preliminary informational only; the final system of admission points is defined by the Admission Guide in force at any given time.)
