The War of Numbers concluded: STAT WARS ended with the triumph of Budapest teams

One has to find the way among the digital world’s data quickly, accurately and with a critical eye. This has been proven by the high school students who competed in the finals of the STAT WARS national statistical team competition organized by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) on 18 February. Among the 9th and 10th graders, the team named “BDG 10C” from the Berzsenyi Dániel High School in Budapest proved to be the best, while in the 11th and higher-grade field, the “Próbáljuk meg” team from the Budapest Fazekas Mihály Practicing Elementary and High School took first place. The winning teams successfully qualified for the European round organized by Eurostat.

The STAT WARS competition, organized for the 12th time this year carried the Digital Society title. 330 four-member teams from all over the country entered the challenge. During the four rounds of the contest participants had not only to calculate, but to interpret, find correlations and make quick decisions. The first three rounds took place online, the best teams competed in person at the national finals in Budapest at the HCSO head office. 10 teams made it to the finals in the 9th–10th grade group, in the 11th and higher-grade category – due to a tie – 12 teams competed for the podium places.

Playful challenges and thought-provoking statistical questions awaited them in the finals, such as Maze, Digital Everyday, Banner Headlines, AI - Digital Hallucinations, or the Mosaic Picture – where logic, data sensitivity, and teamwork all played a key role. The winners of the age groups and their tutors received cash prizes and prizes in kind. The first and second place winners of the national final not only achieved domestic success, but they also qualified for the European statistical competition announced by Eurostat.

1st place: BDG 10 C team – Berzsenyi Dániel Secondary School (Budapest)

2nd place: Havas team – Piarista Secondary School (Vác)

3rd place: Jürgen team – SZC Türr István Technical Institute (Baja)

11th and higher-graders:

1st place: Próbáljuk meg team – Budapest Fazekas Mihály Practicing Elementary and High School (Budapest)

2nd place: Buckalakók team – BGSZC Hunfalvy János Bilingual Economics Technical Institute (Budapest)

3rd place: Mekkelek team – Cistercian Saint Emeric High School of Buda (Budapest)
