Final sprint for the European Health Interview Survey

Every answer counts! Respondents will receive a shopping voucher.

ELEF logóThe Hungarian phase of the European Health Interview Survey (EPHS), which is being conducted in Hungary by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, will end on 15 December. More than six thousand people have already answered the questions of the representative research, contributing to a comprehensive picture of the health status of the population and the factors influencing it. In the coming weeks, the Office is also waiting for the answers of the selected people who have not yet responded, so that conclusions valid for the entire country can be drawn. Participation is voluntary. All respondents will receive a shopping voucher.

The European Health Interview Survey covers the population aged 15 and over living in private households. The sample of people from 538 settlements across the country was selected randomly, using a mathematical-statistical method. The selected individuals who have not responded so far are invited to participate again by letter sent to HCSO Ügyfélkapu+ (Client Gate+) or DÁP (Digital Citizenship Programme). The questionnaire can be completed on the internet until 15 December, and those who do not take advantage of the option of completing it online will be contacted in person or by telephone by enumerators with a photo ID. Responding is voluntary. Respondents will receive a shopping voucher worth 5,000 forints if completed online, or 1,000 forints if completed with an enumerator’s assistance.

HCSO treats the data obtained from the survey as confidential and uses them exclusively for statistical purposes, in aggregate, excluding the possibility of individual identification. The first domestic publication of the survey results is expected in the spring of 2026, and the validated data of the member states will be available later on the website of Eurostat.

The European Health Interview Survey has been conducted in Hungary for the fourth time since 2009. The implementation of the survey is required by EU legislation (Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2529) for all member states. The periodically repeated health survey not only allows the correlations between health status and lifestyle factors influencing it to be revealed, but also allows changes in the health status of the population to be monitored. The uniform methodology and questionnaire for data collection allow the results to be compared internationally. The data obtained during the survey contribute to the development of health policy measures in the member states, to the improvement of the quality of healthcare systems, and are also crucial in the development of research and programmes related to health care and health preservation.

Applicants from among the health survey respondents are also welcome to participate in the National Nutrition and Nutritional Status Survey (OTÁP2025) until 15 December. The survey, organised by the National Centre for Public Health and Pharmacy (NNGYK), aims to learn about dietary habits that considerably influence health and to assess nutritional status. The survey will take place in 219 settlements across the country, with the involvement of healthcare professionals. Participants in OTÁP2025 will receive a smart bracelet and a shopping voucher worth 15,000 forints as a thank you for their participation.

Further information about ELEF is available on HCSO website, and about OTÁP on NNGYK website.
