The world behind the numbers – young people in the language of statistics

The Buday László contest of this year highlighted by record participation that statistics is an inspiring field for the young generation, too

The Csányi Foundation, the Local History Society, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO) and the Hungarian Statistical Association announced this year, for the third time, the contest in memory of the former Director of the HCSO, László Buday, with the aim to popularize statistical thinking and approach among young people. A record number of applications have been received this year. Prizes have been handed over on 31 October 2025 in the Ceremonial hall of the Hungarian National Museum. The Local History Society was the host of the event.

The Buday László competition is a unique initiative connecting scientific education and creative self-expression, while offering students the opportunity to present from their individual point of view what statistics means for them in the 21st century.

There were three competition categories this year: short story, presentation and infographics. Applicants were required to present settlement statistics related works in the presentation and infographics categories, the organisers expected history of statistics inspired works in the short story category. The record number of applications highlighted that the young generation is open-minded when it comes to the values and methodology of statistics.

The awards went to:

Short story category:

1st place: László Levente Tóth

3rd place: Réka Adél Kasoly

Special prize: Gergő Fekete

Presentation category:

1st place: Dorka Hanna Szabó
2nd place: Olivér Sashegyi
3rd place: Milán Vajda

Special prize: Zora Tari

Infographics category:

1st place: László Tamás Kaposvári
2nd place: Anna Takács
3rd place: Zsombor István Barkóczy

Special prize: Dorottya Tatár
