Collection of maps of HCSO Library

The collection of HCSO Library, containing more than 850,000 volumes covers not exclusively books. The volume titled "Directory of the public Library and Map Collection of the Hungarian Royal Central Statistical Office"published back in 1898 already contained 230 maps. The collection of maps of the library has increased ever since, nowadays comprising 14,500 maps. The invaluable treasures of the collection, particularly the maps dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries can be used only in possession of a researcher’’s permission but the other parts of the stock can be viewed freely by anybody.

100 maps of our rich collection became part of the Hungarian Digital Image Library.

The Hungarian Digital Image Library was established in 2008-2009 under the direction of the National Széchényi Library and in co-operation of 48 Hungarian libraries. The programme aims to provide users a common interface for the stock of images of Hungarian libraries. HCSO Library joined the initiative, too, thus photos of statistical history and 100 rare maps of HCSO Library are all freely available on the interface of the image library:

An album illustrated with maps, titled "Maps before 1945 in the Library of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office", which contains data on maps of HCSO Library published before 1945, will be issued in 2011. Its manuscript has already been produced.
