1956 in statistics

Statistics were also compiled on persons illegally emigrated in 1956. The report on social and cultural statistics of HCSO provided information on the distribution of those who left the country by place of residence, by date of exit or by family status. There are also data available on the number of people went to a given country and the employment they had.

According to a report that was declared confidential, the number of population in Hungary at the end of 1956 - based on estimates including only natural increase -would have been 9 950 000, however, - as a result of emigration - it was 1.5% less, 9 804 000. It turned out that there was a change in the distribution of population by sex: the proportion of women was again at the level of 1949, there were 1080 women per 1000 men in 1957.
