All users, without any restriction, can request statistical data managed by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. The management of the requests differs for requests for previously published statistical data (on the internet or in other form) or requests for datasets not available publicly that can be fulfilled by internal databases of the HCSO.


Fulfillment of data requests for public statistical data

Fulfillment of data requests in the form of personal customer service or call center

The Information Service of the HCSO provides information on all data included in publications formerly issued by the HCSO either on internet or in paper-based publications during visiting hours or via call center service. Please see the details below.

Fulfillment of written data requests

In case of written data requests, the HCSO staff of the Information Service informs the person sending the data request about the availability (place and form) of the requested information in 5 working days. If the requested information is available on the website of the HCSO then the link to the dataset will also be indicated. If the requested information is available only in the form of a paper-based publication then the HCSO will inform the person requesting the information about the availabilities of the concerned document and the options to buy the publication.


If it becomes evident during the evaluation of the data request from professional and data protection point of view that the requested statistical information/dataset cannot be fulfilled by data included in publications formerly issued by the HCSO either on internet or in paper-based or if the requested information is not available and its preparation requires IT and methodological preparation then the concerned data can be requested by using the data request forms only. In such cases the HCSO will send the relevant data request form to the person requesting the data.


Following the evaluation of the data request from professional and data protection point of view, the HCSO informs the person requesting the data about the available data access channels in 5 working days.


Fulfillment of data requests for not public statistical information

If the requested information cannot be accessed using publicly available databases or publications of the HCSO or if the requested data is not available in the HCSO and its preparation requires IT and methodological preparation then the concerned data can be requested by using the data request forms only.


In order to fulfill data requests for not public statistical information, the HCSO offers 6 data access channels for the users. 2 of these channels are available for all users without restrictions while 4 of them are available for researchers for scientific purposes only.


Data access channels available for all users

The following 2 data access channels are available for all users without restrictions:


  • Individual requests for tabular data

    Using this data access channel, access to tabular data can be requested. Following the positive evaluation of the data request from professional and data protection point of view, the requested tabular data will be sent to the person requesting the data using the preferred transmission mode (e-mail, post).
  • Access to Public Use Files

    Publicly available microdata sets with strong statistical disclosure control can be accessed by using this data access channel for testing, teaching and research purposes.

Data access channels available for scientific purposes only

The following 4 data access channels are available only for researchers for scientific purposes. The HCSO performs a researcher accreditation procedure for all data requests for these 4 data access channels.


  • Safe Centre access

    The HCSO offers access to deidentified microdata sets for scientific purposes in the safe environment of the Safe Centre operated by the HCSO in Budapest.
  • Remote access

    The offers access to deidentified microdata sets for scientific purposes in the safe environment of the remote access points operated by the HCSO under the same access conditions as the Safe Centre access.
  • Remote execution

    For scientific purposes, the HCSO produces the requested research outputs inside its own safe environment based on the specifications/syntax files provided by the researcher.
  • Release of anonymised microdata sets

    By using this data access channel the HCSO provides anonymised microdata sets for the researcher for scientific purposes.

Services available free of charge and for a fee

If the data request refers to statistical data that


  • can be derived from the publicly available databases on the website of the HCSO but the person requesting the data requests a compilation for his/her own needs and the preparation of the requested dataset, regardless the methodology or IT solution used, takes more than 1 hour,
  • is not available in the HCSO in the requested format and its production based on publicly not available information, regardless the methodology or IT solution used, takes more than 1 hour,
  • can be fulfilled only via datasets prepared for the specific request in the safe environment of the HCSO and the research output will undergo the output checking procedure,

then the HCSO might charge for these additional services. In such cases the HCSO will contact the person requesting the information with a price offer setting the details of the requested data, the price and the deadline of access.
