Name of the organisation:

In 2022, based on Article 17 (1) of the Fundamental Law, the Parliament decided to establish the Ministry of Culture and Innovation among others in Act II of 2022 on the List of Ministries of Hungary. The duties and powers of the Minister are listed in Articles 128-139 of Government Decree No. 182/2022 (24 May 2022) on the Duties and Powers of the Members of the Government.

Official statistical activities:

The Cultural and Innovation Ministry collects data by sector as follows:

  1. In the official collection of statistics on the cultural sector, the respondents are institutions, local governments, organisations and enterprises engaged in public cultural activities; libraries; zoos (wildlife parks and cultural parks); museums; exhibition organisers; archives and performing arts organisations: theatres, dance companies, orchestras. The Institute of Culture Nonprofit Public Benefit Ltd. (NMI) The National Institute of Library Services of the National Széchényi Library and the Hungarian National Archives are involved in the collection of data on archives. Registered theatres, dance companies, orchestras, museums and zoos provide data directly to the Ministry. The data is provided electronically once a year in a single interface.
  2. The ministry also collects data on adult education through the "Adult Education Data System”.
  3. The ministry organises and implements higher education data collections in the field of higher education, including the main data on students and degree holders of higher education institutions, in accordance with the OSAP, which are carried out by the data providers using the "Higher Education Information System".
  4. In the field of vocational education and training, the Ministry collects data on the activities of vocational education and training institutions, including their technical and human resources, through the Vocational Education and Training Information System (SZIR).

The range of official statistics produced:

Official statistical surveys and data collection for statistical purposes cover:

  • data on organisations involved in public cultural activities
  • the activities of zoos, wildlife parks and cultural parks in Hungary
  • the situation and activities of libraries
  • data on museum institutions
  • reports on exhibitions, concerts, archives, the activities of performing arts organisations
  • on educational expenditure in non-public higher education institutions
  • the activities of vocational training institutions
  • the activities of adult education institutions, and
  • main data on students in higher education institutions.

Data from the checked and processed datasets are published by the HCSO in compliance with data protection rules.

Cultural data:

Official, public data from cultural statistics collections are published on the main Kultstat website, broken down by year and by collection, in Excel table format that can be downloaded (https://kultstat.oszk.hu). Public data is available to anyone without registration.

Library data in processed form are published by the Research and Analysis Department (KEO) of the Library Institute on https://ki.oszk.hu/dokumentumtar/konyvtari-statisztika-harmonizalt-idosoros-adatbazisa-2015-2020 website.

Using the time-series data, KEO staff also produced a series of thematic reports entitled Library Trend Reports, highlighting the main changes in the Hungarian library system. In addition, a visualisation of library data is underway.
